THADDIUS IS QUIET IN the baths, no matter how hard I try to talk to him. The silence that stretches between us is an awkward one, and I’m not sure what I can do to break it. Once we’re clean, and I’m as free as I can be of the gold powder, we head back to his room.

As soon as we reach his door, I say, “I’m not going to tell anyone, you know. I promised.”

Thaddius blinks and turns to look at me, as if just remembering that I’m following him. His thoughts seem a million miles away. “No, I know you won’t,” he says through a sigh. “Thank you. Seriously.”

I hate that I’m the cause of his sudden subdued mood. Even now I still feel guilty for bringing up his lineage like I did, but I wonder if I can’t snap him out of it. I put on my most flirtatious grin and say, “Is there anything else I can do for you tonight, champion?”

Thaddius gives a rueful grin as he rubs his face. “Honestly? I’m pretty tired,” he admits. “After today, you’ve got to be too. You never really did get your nap.”

I shrug as I step a bit closer to him. “You checked the rest of the things off of my list. Is there anything else I can check off of yours?”

Thaddius chuckles at that. He grabs my face gently, tapping my cheek in something like a caress. “You’ve done enough. Why don’t you go get some rest."

My smile falters a little. “You’re sure?” It seems like an abrupt end to an already strange kind of evening.

He lets his bandaged arms drop. “I’m sure. I just need a good night’s sleep. But if you want any more information on hypnosis, come find me. I’ll be happy to give you some reading.”

“Thanks,” I say, and realize I’m being dismissed. I hover by his door, a little uncertain. “Are you sure you’re alright?”

Thaddius’ smile is a little sad, and I’m not sure why. “I’m fine,” he promises. “Are you?”

“I’m fine,” I say, though I’m still not so certain. This whole thing started on a strange note, and it’s definitely ending on one, too.

“Can I check on you tomorrow?” he asks.

"Of course.”

"I know I wasn’t your winner of choice, but thanks for being a good sport tonight.” He opens his door as he says, “Sleep well, Dom.”

The door closes behind him, and I let out a long breath, a little unsure what to do now. It’s really not too late, and I’m not ready to head back to my room yet. I didn’t expect to spend tonight alone, and feeling as off as I do, I don’t really relish the idea.
